Nature Photography

April 13, 2020 - April 30, 2020

We live in an amazing corner of the world where nature is all around us and often only steps away; from rocky river shores to our big Montana skies, it’s truly a photographer’s dream. This course covers the basics of four genres that capture the beauty and wonder of nature: macro for the small world, landscape for the endless vistas, wildlife for the creatures with whom we share this wonderful planet, and abstract for the artistry in it all. Instructors and nature-lovers Jessica Carter and Rob Gappert will share shooting tips, and both technical and compositional considerations, to help you photograph nature more confidently and intentionally.

In addition to lectures, the course includes a field shoot and a critique session. The field shoot is an opportunity to practice what you learned in lectures with help available, while the critique session offers valuable feedback on your images.

Topics covered include:

  • Basic exposure review (aperture, shutter speed, ISO)
  • Common lenses, gear, and camera settings for landscape, wildlife, and macro photography
  • Creating compelling compositions for landscape, wildlife, macro, and abstract/fine art images
  • Capturing “lucky shots”
  • Ethics in nature photography

You should come to class with a working knowledge of your DSLR/mirrorless camera and a basic knowledge of exposure, but there will be a short review in the first class session. We’ll also discuss recommended lenses for each type of photography, but you’ll be able to photograph with whatever lens(es) you own. (It is not a prerequisite to have a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens and a macro lens.) Come with the gear you already own and learn how to make the most of it!
