Building a Client Base and Drumming Up Work Online Only

This class is taught online only. RMSP uses Zoom for online education. We limit online classes to 25 participants to ensure there is time for students to ask questions. Time will not be spent learning Zoom in class so we recommend familiarizing yourself with the platform prior to starting class. To download the Zoom app on your computer, please do that here. A Meeting ID number and password will be emailed to all registered students 24 hours before the first class session. Headphones are required for all RMSP online classes.

Class sessions are live and are not recorded for later viewing. This allows for interaction between the instructor and the students. Please click "Schedule" for specific dates and times.


This class is primarily designed for folks looking to shoot for local or national magazines and small commercial brands or local businesses. The information will also touch upon taking these same steps and aiming for larger, more prestigious clients, as your own work improves to that level. Instructor, Jeff McLain, will provide each student an opportunity to show their current portfolio of images.

Session 1:
  • Assessing Your Work: Jeff will look through a variety of images and discuss how to separate your work into salable categories in preparation for your one-on-one meeting.
  • One-on-One Meeting: Show your best work to Jeff on Zoom! Jeff will look at your online portfolio of what you want to sell to the market. Students should have some sort of online gallery of images that represent their best work, i.e., the work they want to shoot professionally. Minimum of 10 images; maximum of 30. (These one-on-one meetings will be scheduled after the first class.)
Session 2:
  • Researching Your Target Audience: Jeff will discuss the methods of determining who your target buyers could be, capturing their specific information, and building a workable database for your direct marketing campaign. He’ll touch upon database services that may be helpful to you as your business grows and you want to reach bigger clients.
Session 3:
  • Marketing Materials and Methods: Jeff will discuss the various marketing methods to get your work seen and ways to analyze the results so you can tweak your campaign as needed.

Equipment

What is the cutoff date for registration?

We accept registrations on a first-come first-served basis until a course is full. Register early!

How many participants are in Evening Courses?

Evening courses taught in the classroom enroll a maximum of 12 students. Courses taught online enroll a maximum of 25 students.

What is RMSP's Evening Courses cancellation policy?

For Evening Courses taught in an RMSP classroom, tuition is refunded in full minus a $25 processing fee (per course) if you notify RMSP at least five business days before the course start date. If your cancellation is received fewer than five days prior to the course start date, full tuition is retained by RMSP. No refunds are given for cancellations or no-shows after the course is in progress. Refunds will be processed within 30 days after our office receives notice of cancellation.

For Evening Courses taught online, tuition will be refunded in full if you notify RMSP at least two business days (48 hours) before the course begins. If you notify RMSP fewer than two business days prior to the course start date, full tuition is retained by RMSP.

Instructor

INSTRUCTOR
Jeff McLain

Jeff McLain is a photographer, videographer, and digital retoucher.

After his photography education, Jeff got his start as a freelance photo assistant in San Francisco working on editorial, catalog and advertising shoots. His skills in Photoshop and computing allowed him to help photographers bridge the gap between the film days and all-digital workflows, and he stood at the forefront of the advent of the career of the "Digital Technician."

Jeff soon moved into shooting, and then moved laterally to video capture. His background as a multi-instrumental musician has also benefited his understanding of sound design and audio capture, which can be a technically challenging aspect of film-making.

He worked for many years as a digital technician for Pier 1 Imports, Pottery Barn and a slew of others. As a photographer, he has shot for Williams Sonoma, Mountain Living Magazine, Keen Shoes, Mountain Hardwear, Red Envelope, and Robert Mondavi Wines, among others.

He has loaded 15 cases of equipment onto planes, coordinated with Spanish-speaking producers in Mexico, photographed hamburgers by window-light in Hong Kong, shot smoothies on the balcony of Rudolph Valentino's Hollywood mansion, talked about film technology on a photo shoot with George Lucas, and has worked out of helicopters, Cessnas and random hotel rooms.

He has been a freelancer for over 15 years and takes a 'real-world' approach to his perspective of the photographic industry and the skills needed in today's market. Locally, he and his wife own and operate a boutique wedding videography business.

Jeff is a 2001 graduate of Hallmark Institute of Photography and has B.A. from the University of Montana. When not shooting in-studio or on-location, Jeff spends time with his wife, son, dog and cat in Missoula, Montana. He plays bluegrass dobro, banjo and guitar to unwind.
