Intermediate Astrophotography Online Only

August 26, 2020 - September 02, 2020

This class is taught online only. RMSP uses Zoom for online education. We limit online classes to 25 participants to ensure there is time for students to ask questions. Time will not be spent learning Zoom in class so we recommend familiarizing yourself with the platform prior to starting class. To download the Zoom app on your computer, please do that here. A Meeting ID number and password will be emailed to all registered students 24 hours before the first class session. Headphones are required for all RMSP online classes.

Class sessions are live and are not recorded for later viewing. This allows for interaction between the instructor and the students. Please click "Schedule" for specific dates and times.

In this class we take over where my class, Basic Astrophotography, left off and we take a deeper dive into some of the more complex concepts in astrophotography. If you’ve been doing astrophotography for a while and are looking for ways to take your images to the next level, this is the class for you. This class will focus on equipment and software.

We will cover the following topics:
  • H-alpha camera conversion
  • Dedicated CCD and CMOS cameras
  • Mono vs. color cameras
  • Cooled vs. uncooled cameras
  • Choosing a camera and scope – oversampling
  • Go-To mounts
  • Filters – light pollution and narrowband
  • Powering your gear
  • Guiding with PHD2
  • Planning a shoot with Stellarium
  • Imaging with Sequence Generator Pro
  • Stacking and editing

NOTE: You must have prior astrophotography experience or have taken a basic astrophotography course to attend this class. We will not be spending time discussing basic topics such as calibration frames, exposure, focus, and stacking.
