Humans are hardwired for storytelling. We’ve been telling stories for thousands of years — not just with words but with images, too (cave paintings, Egyptian tombs, medieval tapestries, the list goes on and on). Photography is yet another incredible medium to share stories because we can capture and convey moments in mere seconds. So whether you have a vivid imagination and want to create stories from scratch, are intrigued by the world as it is and want to tell the stories of the people and places around you, or simply want to capture the stories of your own life, this class is an opportunity to develop and practice your storytelling skills.

Session 1:
  • Intro to story / what it is and what it's not
  • Examples of when and where story is used in photography
  • Approaches to storytelling
  • Ways of telling a story without words
  • Planning a story / looking for story opportunities
Session 2:
  • How to craft the desired experience and mood of your story
  • Story flow and rhythm
  • Editing and presentation considerations

Between Sessions 2 and 3, you'll go create your story!

Session 3:
  • Critique/feedback on the awesome stories you and your classmates create

It’s recommended (but not required) that you come to this class with a basic understanding of exposure. If you’re still shooting on Auto or simply want a great refresher, check out our YouTube video Photography Basics: Part I – Understanding Exposure.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS:

"Jessica's knowledge & encouragement came through each week! The information was presented well at a good pace. Her edits/suggestions of our submissions were candid, professional and compassionate. You can tell she loves living and photography and "seeing" people's stories."

"I appreciated Jessica's expertise, friendly manner and positive way of teaching. I didn't feel intimidated, which I had anticipated due to my amateur photography skills and knowledge."

"Jessica is an excellent teacher. She knows what to emphasize and uses teaching tools to good effect. I've taken lots of photos and workshops. This is among the best."
